Aging skin

As we age, changes occur in our skin that become visibly apparent. The sun, our environment, gravity, hormones, and genetics all have an effect on our skin as we age. People tend to notice wrinkles first, along with colour changes, a loss of volume, loss of elasticity, and texture changes.

After the age of 25, collagen, a building block of skin, decreases each year. As we age, the skin becomes less efficient in healing itself and has a reduced immune function. Hyaluronic acid production slows down leaving skin prone to dryness and weakening the skin.

Cysts

A variety of cysts exist and, while unsightly, they are generally harmless and usually painless. Depending on the type of cyst they can be ruptured causing inflammation, pain, and discharge. Cysts should always be examined by a dermatologist to ensure they are indeed benign.

Excessive Sweating

Hyperhidrosis is abnormally severe and excessive sweatiness of the underarms, forehead, and hands that are unrelated to heat or exercise. It is an overreaction of the sweat glands. It can be triggered by medical conditions or anxiety. Some people who experience hyperhidrosis will sweat through their clothing. In 2004, Shapero Dermatology was one of the first dermatology centres in Canada to introduce the use of Botox for people suffering from hyperhidrosis and has been one of the largest centres in Canada for treating hyperhidrosis.

The minimization of discomfort has always been most important to us. We employ the use of very thin (fine gauge) needles, especially imported from the United States, and the use of ice and dynamic vibration for the hands.

Sweat mapping is done before every underarm procedure to outline the area of sweatiness so that unnecessary areas are not treated, and the dosage can be minimized.

Highly concentrated topical aluminum chloride, and the gold standard, injectable botulinum toxoid.

Known as lentigenes, these dark spots on the skin are benign lesions that occur anywhere on the body that gets exposed to sunlight. They appear commonly on the back of the hands and the face. They will not fade on their own over time, however, they are easily treatable.

Dark Skin Marks

In some people, particularly with skin of colour, after inflammation in the skin dark marks can be left behind even long after the original skin condition is resolved.  While generally not a health hazard, it can cause a cosmetic concern leaving you feeling self-conscious. Acne Scarring

Different types of Acne Scarring are created as a result of how the skin reacts to healing during and after acne outbreaks. Acne scarring can result in small pits in the skin to a rippled appearance. Hypertrophic scarring also occurs leaving raised, pink lumps that may itch or otherwise hurt.

While acne scarring is not dangerous, it can seriously affect an individual’s self-image and self-esteem.
